Doubts about elections will not go away unless situation improves: Mujibur Rahman
He raised this allegation at a press conference after a meeting with the chief advisor on Tuesday afternoon. Mujibur Rahman said that his party AB Party clearly presented the issue in the meeting with the chief advisor. They believe that if this situation does not improve, the doubts that various quarters have about the next national elections cannot be dispelled. Mujibur Rahman said, “We are seeing a great lack of coordination, firmness and discipline in the government’s activities. Especially in the case of Nurul Haque’s injury and the incident at Chittagong University, we have seen that there is a lack of coordination and control or authority between the government and the law enforcement agencies.’
In the meeting with the Chief Advisor, highlighting the statement made by the AB Party on controlling the weak law and order situation, Mujibur Rahman said that they have advised the interim government to hold meetings with the participation of field members of each force, both physically and virtually, to maintain law and order. In addition, the head of government should take firm steps to control the law and order situation.
The AB Party also drew the attention of the Chief Advisor in the meeting regarding the efficiency of the Election Commission. Mujibur Rahman said that former government officials who are experts in conducting elections, who have a reputation as returning officers in the past, and if there are such people in the bureaucracy, they can be made to work even if they are appointed on a contractual basis. In the discussion, Mujibur Rahman opposed the lottery system in administrative reshuffle. He suggested reshuffles considering the risk and the distance between the district and the upazila.
To improve the law and order situation, the AB Party has suggested the chief advisor to form a coordinated committee with political parties at the national and district-upazila levels. Mujibur Rahman said, “So that political parties have a role there and the responsibility of the law and order forces is eased to some extent.”
Mujibur Rahman said that the chief advisor has called on them to unite all parties of all views to deal with the current crisis.
